Bolt Action! D-Day Firefight Starter Set

One of those other projects I mentioned, I treated myself to the Bolt Action starter set recently as I've always had a weakness for historical gaming, though I've only ever dabbled on the side lines. With Kirton Games up and running, and now stocking Warlord Games items I've decided to take the plunge and give it a go!

You get 10 Wehrmacht, a Half-track, 20 US Army Infantry and a couple of ruins in the starter, alongside the mini-rulebook (very similar to those in the 40k & WFB Starters), dice and the usual bits and pieces, about average for £70 I suppose!

I've already decided to collect the Wehrmacht as my army - as much as I'd love to collect the British, I want a Tiger... maybe some Brits later on.

I've also decided that I'm not going to go 'to town' with the painting, nor with historical accuracy on uniforms, equipment and markings (as much as I know that will irritate some historical gamers). For my first little delve into WW2 gaming I'm looking to get a feel for the rules and enjoy a few games rather then indulge in a history lesson. Not to say I might not look at a more historically accurate force in the future, just right now I want to get playing.

With the contents assembled, my first lesson was just how fiddly the Warlord Games historical infantry are to put together - though the Half-track was a breeze - multi-part true scale 28mm is a lot more tricky to work with them my usual fair, and I know I've been sloppy with the mould lines. Chock loads of modelling options though!

Anyway, here is the assembled set, next stop some appropriate coloured sprays for base coating them, a little detailing, washes, and then I'm going to treat myself to that Tiger!

The Praetorian Life Guards - Master Head

Its not all Kirton Games & Kickstarters!

I've got a few projects on the go, a couple of commissions which are near finished, one a skills exchange, the other some Guard character conversions.

I've even got a few projects on the go for myself and Curious Constructs, infact some which are overdue a blog post really.

A long time a go you might remember my original Life Guard conversions, more recently when the Scions came out I ranted and raved how these were perfect for a new generation of Life Guards.

Well my masters arrived back from the casters late last week, and I've done a quick assembly job while returning the bulk of them to go into a production mould - hopefully I'll have those back by the end of this month, but in the meantime...!

Test model! Im really pleased with the overall look, need to get it undercoated and figuring out the scheme next!

28mm Infantry Support Weapons Kickstarter - NOW LIVE!

Curious Constructs and our partners at Zinge Industries are very pleased to announce the start of our second Kickstarter campaign!

This time, with your help, we are going to put into production a 28mm Weapons Platform and four brand new Steampunk inspired Heavy Weapons, a Heavy Caliber Machine Gun, Rocket Launcher, Mortar and Cannon. All of these have been designed by Kit Burrows of Zinge Industries, a highly regarded 3D designer with an extensive portfolio of work.

Whichever of these options you prefer, this multi-part kit, which will be cast in high quality resin offers huge potential for customisation! In fact, all the new parts are fully compatible with the existing Field Artillery kits which were the result of last years Kickstarter campaign giving you yet more options.

If we exceed our funding target we’ll be adding further options as stretch goals, including more weapons, platforms and other accessories. We’ve got lots of ideas – and we do mean LOTS! Some are more esoteric then others – don’t get Gareth from Zinge Industries started on the subjects of Pigeons and Squirrels…. However, we also want to know what you’d like to see! This Kickstarter is very much a living project and as much as possible we will be driven by what you would like us to produce!

Check out the Kickstarter campaign at,

Flash Gitz - First Look

Still no new codex for the Orks, but the Flash Gitz have arrived! The perks of running a game shop mean I got my very early this morning, and just wanted to share a couple of pictures of mine in the early build stage.
When I first saw the models I thought they looked a bit too much, but then I suppose they are Orks, and Flash Gitz of course. Although the poses are very similar, the sprue has plenty of options on, and I think it would be easy to create a squad of 10 unique looking models.

They've still got a lot of work until I'm happy enough to give them an undercoat, plenty of mold lines to remove, and small details to add (gun straps and shell casings)! The guns are so huge and detailed that I will be painting them seperately but I've added nearly everything else. Tomorrow I'll finish the build and will be then will start paitning.

We're also running a fab deal of the week with Ork Reinforcements are now available for Pre-Order from Kirton Games! Pre-Order 3 Ork Big Gunz with our Pre-Order Deal and we'll give you the Ork Big Mek absolutely FREE! And don't forget about our FREE UK Shipping!

Mordheim - Building the City of the Damned (Part 1)

Some bright spark (me :P ) recently decided it would be a god idea to get some of Games Workshops old specialist games being played at our store Kirton Games. We settled on starting up Mordheim as the first delve into this, after getting some popular support for it from several local gamers.

Mordheim for those of you who don't know was a skirmish game released by Game Workshop in 1999, set in the Warhammer World in an Empire city of the same name which is destroyed by a comet. The comet scatters a precious material, Wyrdstone across the ruins of the city, which warbands, mostly of human but also consisting of many other race from the Warhammer world seek to collect and come to fight over.

Its a very terrain hungry game, and belated I realised we'd need rather alot of ruins, given we did'nt just want to end up using the store extensive 40k ruin collection.

After a bit of research looking at the options, I decided that the best way forward was to build our own, despite the fact though I've been in the hobby for years I've never really built much in the way of terrain!

I've started off with some basic materials, a pack of A3 Foamboard, a little bit of scrap plasti-card, lots of PVA glue and some pin.... these were the first results.

I've gone for just building lots of houses to a similar design for now, with 6 completed to this stage.  I've not bothered with templates as they are fairly simple to construct, each floor allows around 2.5" of headroom suitable for most standard sized models.

Of course while functional they are no where near finished, so the next stage is detailing, a process I'm just starting to experiment with. For now I'm only working on one building for this, with floorboards added from lollypop sticks. I'm now waiting for a big delivery of these so I can do joists and beams on the exterior as well.

Once these are done I'll be using some filler and textured paint to finish the buildings off, before basing and painting the buildings. The lat piece of the puzzle for now though has been ladders, settling on a easy if time consuming build for these of two toffee apple sticks with holes drilled into them, into which cocktail sticks are fitted as rungs!

The build continues!

Orks - The subtle look

Hello all, just wanted to share some of my orky constructions. I love the convertibility  of the orks, and over the years I've seen some pretty outlandish ones. Below is a collection of the more subtle ones from my collection.

Zagstruk
I love the Zagstruk model, and will eventually want to have a full unit of stormboyz. I'm really pleased with this subtle conversion. A simple repose and the additional of the smoke really makes him stand out, especially as he's essentially floating above his base. I'll be doing a tutorial on the smoke effect in a future post.

Grot Flyer (deffkopta)
This guy is built entirely from ork dakkjet bits. I really love the expression on the grots face, he's in a full blown dive bomb!
Ork Big Mek
I've used this guy as various proxies, from an ork biker warboss, to a big mek with kustom force field. He was built almost entirely from the Colonels extensive guard bitz box.

Hope you like these, I'll be sharing some more soon, in the mean time would love to see some of yours orky creations! If GW don't grant my wishes and bring out a plastic boar boyz kit, then I'll be sharing my Ork boar boyz converions in future posts.

Happy converting!

Lomo

Farewell old friend - Ork Codex

Happy Bank holiday all! Just a short guest post here by the third member of the Kirton Games trio, where I just wanted to say a short goodbye to the out-going ork codex now the new book is pretty much confirmed and share a couple of my favourite ork builds.

Although I've been playing 40K since the mid 90's, I only started playing orks about 5 years ago; I picked up the book during the 5th edition meta crazyness, where everyone playing orks competativly was using either Gazghull and the 4 battlewagons, or Nob bikers. I really wanted to see what else you could do with the book.

The Wrath of Kan
This was probably my favourite build, a true stompy mek-list. I enjoyed a lot of success with this list, and it always looked impressive on the battlefield. Although it was slow, when it did manage to get across the battlefield it normally hit like a tidal wave. When 6th edition came along the list became a lot harder to use, although the lack of fearless saves made the boy units effective tar pits, the 2hp on the killa kanz made them quite easy to drop, especially given the kustom force field was dropped to a 5+ cover save.

Big Mek: kustom force field, eavy armour 90
Big Mek: kustom force field, eavy armour 90
8 Lootas
25 Ork Boyz, Nob, Power Klaw, Boss Pole, eavy armour 195
25 Ork Boyz, Nob, Power Klaw, Boss Pole, eavy armour 195
25 Ork Boyz, Nob, Power Klaw, Boss Pole, eavy armour 195
10 Gretchin: Runtherd. 40
Big Mek's Deff Dread 85
Big Mek's Deff Dread 85
3 Killa Kans: 3 x skorcha. 120
3 Killa Kans: 3 x grotzooka. 125
3 Killa Kans: 3 x rokkit launcha. 150
Total 1500pts

My second favourite build was the all ork biker army led by Wazdakka. This is a very fast, very shooty list and one I'm still using now. All toughness 5, and every gun strength 5 or higher as well as being twin-linked; this was is an awesome list. It's only real weakness is the low leadership on the Nobz, and it was always a shame watching a 300+ point bike unit run away in the first turn if it lost 4 models.

Wazdakka 180pt
12 Ork Warbikers: nob, boss pole, power klaw 340pt
12 Ork Warbikers: nob, boss pole, power klaw 340pt
8 Ork Warbikers: nob, boss pole, power klaw 240pt
Dakkajet
5 Deffkoptas, 3 x rokkits, 2 x twin linke big shoots, 2 x buzz saws
Total -1500pts
In summary despite the fact the ork book is pretty old now it certainly managed to hold its own in the modern era of powerful codices, but above all I still love the amount of fun and themed list you could make from this book, and I genuinely believe there was not a bad unit in this codex.

Anyway roll on the new codex, and hopefully some lovely new ork plastic kits - my hope is for some plastic megz knobz! So what where your favourite lists from the old books, and what are you hoping for the new one?
